Auto spare parts and machinery is a name derived from the automotive and allied spare parts products to serve as a body that will be known and called the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association, Nigeria. The primary objective of the Association is to represent the interest and welfare of all automotive and machinery dealers in Lagos and Nigeria in general. It is the largest automobile spare parts market in Africa.>
The First move towards the formation of the Association was made in 1985 after several attempts made in the past had failed. However, the formal inaugural meeting of the proposed body which received the mandate of the dealers from various ethnic groups in Lagos, was held on November 15Th, 1985 at the mainland Hotel, Oyingbo at the instance of three giants who initiated the bright idea to get auto dealers together under one unifying Umbrella. These notable pacesetters were chief PA. Opaduran, Late Christopher Ucheagwu and Chief S.O Bakere of Oluwalogbon Group of Companies. The Inaugural meeting which was chaired by Alhaji L.A Salami dealt extensively on various issues of interest concerning the young body especially on issues relating to the significance of having an authentic body for tour Traders. A body that will serve as a forum where the Traders, would channel their pressing problems to the appropriate government authorities and agencies.
Some Problems which necessitated the formation of the Association included, denial of import licences to our members, incessant harassment by some unscrupulous members of the Nigeria Police Force, Custom Men, Area boys, multiple Levels by different Tiers of government, High cost of rent , among other problem relating to the trade which could not be solved or treated in the absence of the body.
At subsequent meetings, events continued to progress with the Association growing both in strength and programs. On April 18th, 1986, the association help its first general election that saw Alhaji L. A Salami emerging as the first President, while the Late Chief Christopher Ucheagwu, was elected the vice – President. It is gratifying to note that the Association secured its first seal of authority as a corporate body when on the 26th of October, 1986. It was officially registered with the Federal Ministry of internal affairs, under the Land perpetual Act of 1968, now as a Legal entity, the aims and objectives of the association became clearer efined for guidance and amongst all legitimate and bona fide members. Among them include
- To find ways of rationalizing the activities of the Trade.
- To work out code of conduct for practitioners in the Trade.
- To devise means of controlling incidence of adulteration and fake as opposed to original products.
- To remove Customers’ service such that you have value for your money.
- To encourage specialization
- To explore the possibility of organizing joint ventures.
- To provide avenue for interaction between government and the group.
The association was officially Launched on 26th May, 1988 at the national Art Theatre Iganmu under the chairmanship of Alhaji S.O Gbadamosi a well known industrialist with the then Hon. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Lagos State, Dr. Babatunde St Mathew, as Chief Launcher.
The attendance was very impressive and the ceremony was a graet success. Under the able leadership of Alhaji L.A Salami, The Association grew from strength to strength with tremendous achievement having witnessed three different successful elections in 1986, 1989 and 1992.
On 29th October, 1992, the mantle of leadership was changed and chief Jossy Egwuatu was elected the new President with Alhaji B.A Banjo as the Vice President. We have continued with our Pioneer preoccupation of building an ultra modern model international market to solve the inherent problems of Idumota residential turned market Location. The search for Land for the construction and building of an Ultra modern international auto market or Plaza in place of the over congested Idumota auto market has been one of the primary preoccupation of the association since its inception in 1986. The search crossed seven Roads and Seven Rivers.
In the event of searching out for new Lands to relocate, area boys, Local council workers(Tow Vehicles) engulfed ASPMDA like Locust causing problems leading to mass protests before Chief Michael Otedota, the governor in Alausa in 1993. Those protests in Idumota and Alausa gave birth to presure groups like OPIKE and YOUTHS.
Chief Charles Ages Okeke took over the reigns of power by force in 1994 when the heat of Exodus was no longer bearable, to stop further delay in movement and compromise . In the same year 1994, we signed a lease agreement with Lagos International Trade Fair management Board, to acquire, develop and use for the purpose of trade and business a parcel of Land measuring 27 hectares within the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex. When the deed was signed, this place was a large expanse of bush, inhabited only by snakes and criminals. However our sweat, as well as Loans from relations and Banks, endurance, dedication gave us the key to this great complex .On 14th February 2000, we moved into this complex called ASPMDA.
The name Exodus was derived from Exodus Chapter 14 when the People of Isreal were moving out of Egypt enmass through the Red Sea. Exodus Block was first erected to commemorate that movement of God’s people to the promised Land(From Idumota to Trade Fair Complex).
Subsequently, Chief Dr. Johnson Ayodele Ofortube’s administration played a vital role in the history of ASPMDA . In 2004, the complex was commissioned by the then President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo(GCFR). It will be a great distortion of History and systematic misinformation if we fail to acknowledge and commend the great works, doggedness and wisdom of our past Presidents, Founding Fathers, Past Secretaries Generals, Pioneer Block Officers, Pioneer Security and Surveillance, For all their commendable roles, as well as the unquantifiable price they paid for their master-piece and world class Complex. Also we cannot forget our members who Sacrificed their Lives in other to make ASPMDA a dream come true.
